Polystichum are mostly evergreen or semi-evergreen ferns, with short stout rhizomes and pinnately divided fronds in neat shuttlecock-like rosettes
P. rigens has mid green, narrowly triangular, bipinate evergreen leaf blades and its compact size make it a good choice for the front of a shady border
A lovely compact fern, perfect for woodland gardens and shady patches under trees. Aromatic in mid summer months with arching glossy/leathery mounds of serrated fronds that mature to a mid green colour.
Ideal Conditions:
Prefers full sun or partial shade in free draining soil or compost.
Possible Situation:
Can be used in a variety of situations, from courtyard to Japanese style garden.
